The Church needs 'back-bone'

Those who regularly read my column will know that we have been engaged in a war against offensive billboards in Sandton. Well, Praise the Lord – the offending company DOC-IT, whose sign was featured in our last edition, was forced to change its sign – but this was not without a battle.
We, the Christians, won because we fight the good fight of faith. Those who participated in the “good fight” were determined, tenacious and prepared to put themselves out and to stand up for Jesus. The Bible tells us…“Greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world” 1 John 4:4
This sadly brings me to comment on the general apathy that seems to prevail amongst many believers today. Whilst everybody agrees that this particular sign and other billboards are offensive, the majority are not prepared to do anything about it. I experienced this first hand. The worst excuse, and I received it several times, was “What sign?” This billboard was big and placed on the busiest intersection in Sandton! A case of spiritual myopia perhaps? Others said “It’s not my call to be an activist”. Still others promised to call the MD but when I checked up, they made an excuse of being too busy or they forgot or, “I left a message”.
There was however an exception and they deserve much credit and a huge thank you - Ps. Mark Russel from Bryanston Methodist Church and his group. They did whatever they could to support and to make the necessary calls and write letters and lodge complaints. Possibly there were others that I don’t know of – thank you to you too. Bless you guys - you made the difference.
Brothers and sisters Jesus promised that where there is unity He commands a blessing. He has given us the Holy Spirit who will give us the boldness we need to stand up. 2 Tim 1:7 says “ God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind?” We are not expected to go to battle unequipped. With regular studying and meditating on God’s Word, we will understand 2 Cor 2:14 which assures us “God always leads me in triumph”.
If we don’t shine for God – who will?
