ANC Pledge

ANC Pledge - Why Christians should be concerned

The ANC are planning to replace prayer and Bible reading in schools with a new oath of allegiance to the secular constitution. The announcement by Education Minister Naledi Pandor recently that all South African school children will have to make a pledge of allegiance was met by strong reactions from many Christians. Based on the preamble of the constitution, it is intended to “internalise” the “values of the constitution” according to Pandor.

Pandor said it would be open for public comment “to see if we can live with it” and, depending on the response, children could be heard reciting it in school assemblies by middle of this year.

Why should Christians be concerned?

Pledging allegiance to anything other than God is idolatry. Our constitution places itself as a higher authority than Almighty God, protects the right to life of murderers and rapists but denies the right to life of innocent unborn children, and through the various laws, has opened the door to pornography and same sex marriage. The Christian Action Network has proposed a new pledge, based on The Ten Commandments.

“We, the youth of South Africa, recognising that God has given us a beautiful country, honour Him by committing ourselves to show our gratitude for all His gifts. We promise to work hard and to strive to become good citizens of our country, using our gifts and talents to honour God and serve other people by displaying the characteristics of diligence, integrity and self-control. We will not lie, steal or cheat. Neither will we tolerate amongst ourselves anyone who does.

We sincerely declare that we will uphold the Law of God as expressed in the Ten Commandments and summarised by our Lord Jesus Christ as loving God and loving our neighbour, and that we will try to the best of our ability, and with the help of our Lord and Saviour, to live in accordance with these standards. We will do our best to care for all of God’s creatures and to improve our environment.”
