The Danger of Christian Apathy
The United States is currently embroiled in intense political and social turmoil. The Obama administration appears to be doing everything in its power to obliterate any vestige of America’s Christian heritage and founding principles. The reason Christians in the US find themselves in this situation, is because they ignored the warnings of Scripture. Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge”.
A large percentage of American Christians took their cue from the liberal media and elected as their president - a man they hardly knew. They are now horrified at the slew of anti-Christian policies Barack Hussein Obama is championing through Congress, but more devastated that they actively participated in handing power to a man who is radically transforming America. The Body of Christ in the US is facing the social consequence of their apathy.
The frightening political events unfolding in the US must serve as a warning to Christians in South Africa and everywhere of the catastrophic consequences of self imposed ignorance and apathy.
Christian apathy is dangerous because it provides evil a free reign. British statesman Edmund Burke said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil that good men do nothing”. The Gospel of Jesus Christ in all its manifestations is a force for good. Christians are commanded by Christ to be “salt and light” in society. Salt prevents decay and light dispels darkness. Consequently, the reason we see so much moral decay and spiritual darkness in South Africa today is because those specifically called to promote righteousness and justice in society have abdicated their responsibility.
We have no excuse
I am always fascinated at Christians who – despite possessing the power and authority to effect change - bemoan the current state of affairs in South Africa.
The truth is; you and I cannot change anything by complaining. God has called us to be a people of prayer and action! Significantly, an ignorant Christian - however sincere - is an ineffective Christian. When one considers the moral breakdown and desperate need for truth in society, it becomes critical that every single Christian citizen does what is necessary to inform, educate and equip themselves to provide that truth. In order to effectively impact and influence the political and social sphere of society, we must first understand how it works.
I am often alarmed by the many Christians who believe they can influence our laws by simply adding their names to an e-mail list. It appears the Church has voluntarily withdrawn from any meaningful debate on political and social issues. The failure to articulate Biblical truth in the public square is devastating to the nation. Humanists and homosexual activists operate on the philosophy that when a lie is repeated often enough, it becomes truth! South Africa’s political and social environment is permeated by deception – lies that eventually are accepted as truth. And the only reason this strategy is so successful is because Christians refuse to challenge it.
‘Head in the sand’
The most alarming thing about Christian apathy is the “head in the sand” syndrome. Secular humanists have successfully advanced their anti-family agenda without much opposition because most Christians refuse to acknowledge they are involved in a culture war.
Two incompatible worldviews are engaged in a life and death struggle for the hearts and minds of society. Tragically, the humanists appear more committed to advancing their godless agenda than those called to promote righteousness and truth. Many Christians I speak to appear completely oblivious about the relentless attacks on Biblical Christianity.
The solution to apathy
More troubling is the widespread ignorance in the Church about the role and responsibilities of Christian citizens in society. Crime, corruption, family breakdown, drug and alcohol abuse, sexual immorality, prostitution etc., are destroying family life in South African society. All of these social ills are symptomatic of a society that has rejected the protective Laws of God.
The solution to the social devastation we are currently experiencing is a return to the Biblical value system that provides the only real basis for a strong, healthy and prosperous society. The only way we can advance this value system is through the active involvement of every Christian citizen in South Africa.
