My husband and I are in a church that teaches us to tithe and I can really testify that there is power in tithing/giving. As of late we have had numerous people in our church saying tithing is ‘Old Testament’ (just as the slaying and sacrificing of animals for our sins). Can you please advise me if there is any truth in this?
Answer:
Let the Lord Jesus Christ have the last word on tithing: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe (tenth) of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These things you ought to have done, without leaving the other undone.” - Matt. 23:23 (NKJV)
The New Testament emphasis is on giving in proportion to our income (1 Cor. 16:2). This is God’s way of financing His work and His principles of sowing and reaping have stood the test of time. If a tenth was required under the Law, Christians really should be happy to give much more under Grace!
